The importance of Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre

This short clip is a good example of the importance of good checks before changing lanes.

The situation is the left lane is stationary and the road has a 40mph. At the time I moved from the right to the middle lane (I did signal in case you’re wondering), I was doing around 25mph. Take a look at the clip and let me know what you think. I’ll put a few of my thoughts below the video.

Afterwards I thought about the reasons this happened and came up with the following:

  • The driver looked before I changed lanes and didn’t double check before moving (and didn’t signal as they assumed it was still clear)
  • The driver didn’t look at all.

Now looking at my own driving, could I have done anything different? Maybe. I could have changed lanes later on, but the same thing could’ve happened further along the queue. I could have slowed down, but I had traffic behind me which I had already slowed down slightly before I changed lanes.

I think this comes down to never letting your attention wander. If I had been distracted by using a mobile phone (obviously illegal), or just thinking about what I was going to have for dinner, the outcome could have been very different.
